Saturday, June 21, has been selected for 2008’s Waldoboro Day, continuing a decades-long tradition of honoring small-town life on the Maine coast. A full day of varied activities will hold something of interest for everyone.
One of the unique features of this year’s festival will be the dedication of a plaque honoring early settlers of the area. Sponsored by the Old Broad Bay Family History Association, the plaque will be placed at the nearby Miller School.
Waldoboro Day’s agenda centers on a parade at 10AM through a downtown area filled with booths for food, local products, and information about local organizations. A 5-K race, sprints for kids, a ‘clam-hod’ relay, ring toss and other contests highlight the informal, small-town-fair atmosphere. Visitors may sponsor entries in the classic ‘Rubber Duck’ race, run over a course in the lower falls of the river.
Throughout the day, food courts will offer a variety of enticing fare, bands will be playing in the downtown area, and in the afternoon, nearby ball fields will be the site of the Little League Championship game, as well as a home-run derby open to all. And as the tide approaches its height in mid-afternoon, the Medomak Valley Land Trust will once again offer boats rides around Broad Bay in the estuary.
After dinner, the activity moves up-tempo, with a rock band performing in the street, and the traditional fireworks display bursting over the town.
Waldoboro day activities take place in the center of town, located 1/2 mile south of Moody’s Diner on route 220: the area is also reachable from the south by taking ‘Old Route 1’ , or Rte 32 off of Route 1. Although the actual downtown area is blocked to traffic, adequate parking is available nearby.
