Water Department

The Waldoboro Water Department system recently violated a drinking water treatment technique
requirement - failure to maintain adequate treatment - which resulted in a sample exceeding the
maximum allowable uranium limit. Although this was not an emergency, as our customers, you have
the right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we did to correct this situation.

What does this mean?

We routinely monitor your water for uranium. This tells us whether we are effectively filtering uranium
from the water supply. A water sample collected on 6/4/2024 had a uranium result of 42.1 ug/L
(micrograms per liter). The maximum contaminant level (MCL) for uranium is 30 ug/L. Investigation into
the issue indicated that the filtration system media was not being regenerated at the frequency
recommended by the manufacturer.

What should I do?
• There is no action you need to take at this time. The water system has already taken steps to
correct this issue. The treatment system’s operators performed necessary maintenance on the
uranium filtration system and reduced the levels below 30 ug/L. Sample results after
maintenance were 8.2 ug/L taken on 6/14/2024 and 10.2 ug/L taken on 6/18/2024.
• Some people who drink water containing uranium in excess of the MCL over many years could
experience kidney toxicity as well as an increased risk of cancer. If you have concerns or specific
health issues, you may want to consult your doctor or health care provider.
• These symptoms are not caused only by contaminants in the water, but also by other factors. If
you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice.
What is being done?

Corrective Action
• We performed the required maintenance on the filter system that reduces uranium.
• We resampled treated water for uranium to ensure the levels were below 30 ug/L.
• We flushed the distribution system through fire hydrants to remove water with higher levels.
• We communicated with the Maine Drinking Water Program during and after the event.
